Angels and Demons

Tom Hanks returns in this half decent sequel to The Da Vinci Code.

Who's in it? Tom Hanks, Ewan McGregor, Stellan Skarsgard

What's it about? Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon works to solve a murder and prevent a terrorist act against the Vatican.

What type of film is it? Thriller

Is it any good? If you liked The DaVinci Code, you like the books and like a blockbuster thriller that won’t make you think TOO hard but will entertain you then this film will be right up your street. If you want to be mentally taxed and emotionally moved by some kind of greater spiritual understanding then you might be disappointed. Angels and Demons is better - and faster paced - than The DaVinci Code, which did big business at the box office but got mauled by critics, and it ticks all the boxes but somehow it fails to enthral in quite the way it should although it is far from being a dead loss. Tom Hanks is good value, Ewan McGregor’s Irish accent is a bit dodgy but passable but everyone in the Vatican who is in great danger doesn’t really appear to be that bothered about the impending doom... although there are a few nice set pieces. Rome looks great and the film leaves you with the overall feeling like the third movie in the series – and I am convinced there will be a third film in the series – will finally get everything right. This isn’t a bad film at all, but it could be better… and I am very aware that regardless of what I think it will be huge.
